WHAT IS PLANET SUNSHINE?

The name "Planet Sunshine" is part of a branding exercise for Child Health services designed to improve facilities, make the Children’s Ward a more user friendly place, and take some of the stress and uncertainty out of hospital admissions for our young ones.

We have all heard of Starship Hospital, the Starship Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. They do a fantastic job, and people from this region have donated a lot of money to these places over the years. What people do not realise is, that hundreds of thousands of dollars of Tairawhiti District Health money already goes to Starship directly for services provided. While tertiary services for children will always be required, by improving facilities for our children here, there will be less dependence on Starship, and less need for families to travel out of town. It’s time to help our own children.

The "Planet Sunshine" name was chosen "by the children for the children" and came out ahead of suggestions such as Aniwaniwa, Girl’s Planet and Paikea.

The "Planet Sunshine" brand is used in the ward such as on murals, posters, tee-shirts, health promotion programmes and lunchboxes.

It is hoped that "Planet Sunshine " will become a household name and a "top of the mind" charity for local fundraisers.

The "Planet Sunshine Fund" will initially be kept under the umbrella of the already established Gisborne Hospital Trust, but may become a fully independent Trust at a later date.
